환경미생물 연구실(EML)을 이끌며 자연·인공 환경의 다양한 환경 문제를 미생물 반응으로 이해하고 해결책을 모색한다. 탄소·질소 순환을 바탕으로 메탄·아산화질소 등 온실가스 배출 저감과 자원화, 염소계 오염물질의 미생물 정화 등을 연구한다.
