지반지진·방재 연구실(GEHL)을 운영하며 지진 등 자연재해가 사회기반시설과 도시에 미치는 영향과 메커니즘을 지반공학 관점에서 연구한다. 지진 시 지반-기초-구조물 상호작용, 액상화, 단층 파열에 의한 제방·댐의 균열·침식, 지반 증폭 등을 원심모형실험과 수치해석으로 다룬다.
