전이금속 촉매의 반응 메커니즘을 자기원편광이색성(MCD), 전자상자성공명(EPR), 핵공명진동분광법 등 분광학적 기법과 양자화학 계산(DFT)을 결합해 연구한다. 금속효소와 촉매 중간체의 전자적·기하학적 구조를 규명하며, 비헴 철효소 관련 고원자가 다이아이언 착물 등을 다룬다. 또한 수소 발생 및 물 산화를 위한 생체모방 촉매 설계를 수행한다.
