KAIST 공학생물학대학원(겸 생명화학공학과)의 이상엽 특훈교수가 이끄는 대사 및 생체분자공학 국가연구실(MBEL)이다. 시스템 대사공학 기법으로 미생물 세포공장을 설계하여 연료·화학물질·소재·천연물을 친환경적으로 생산하는 연구를 수행한다. 나일론 전구체, 방향족 탄화수소, 루테인, 색소 셀룰로오스 섬유 등의 미생물 생산을 연구한다.
