KAIST 생명화학공학과 특훈교수로, 대사·생물분자공학 국가연구실(MBEL)을 이끄는 세계적 대사공학 권위자다. 대사공학, 시스템·합성생물학을 기반으로 미생물을 활용한 산업 바이오기술, 바이오리파이너리, 친환경 화학물질·연료 생산을 연구한다. 녹색성장지속가능대학원에 겸직으로 참여하며 지속가능한 바이오 기반 생산 기술을 개발한다.
