신소재공학과(MSE) 교수로 KAIST 다차원 나노스케일 조립 국가창의연구단을 이끄는 연질 나노소재 연구실(Soft Nanomaterials Laboratory, SNML)을 운영한다. 블록공중합체의 유도 자기조립을 이용한 나노리소그래피와 반도체·IoT 소자용 나노패터닝을 핵심 주제로 연구한다. 또한 그래핀 산화물 액정을 비롯한 2차원 나노소재의 자기조립과 화학적 개질을 통해 인공근육형 그래핀 액정섬유, 단일원자 촉매 등 에너지·환경·바이오 응용 신소재를 개발한다. 탄소나노튜브와 그래핀 등 저차원 소재의 조립을 기반으로 한 신소재 발굴을 폭넓게 수행한다.
