전민용 교수의 광섬유광학연구실은 희토류 첨가 광섬유나 반도체 광증폭기를 이용한 광섬유 레이저 광원을 개발한다. 광통신 송신 레이저, 의료 영상 및 치료용 광원, 생체 영상을 실시간으로 촬영하는 광간섭단층촬영(OCT)·광도플러단층촬영 장치, 비선형 광학 현상을 이용한 파장 변환·신호 역다중화·신호 재생 등 광통신 소자 특성 연구를 수행한다.
