로봇 자동화 연구실(Robotics Laboratory)을 이끌며 로봇 역학·계획·제어, 수학적 시스템 이론, 그리고 수학적 데이터 과학 및 기계학습을 연구한다. MIT 학사, 하버드 응용수학 박사 후 1995년부터 서울대 기계공학부 교수로 재직 중이다. IEEE 로봇공학·자동화 학회 회장과 IEEE Transactions on Robotics 편집장을 역임한 IEEE 펠로우이다.
