CASYS(Computer Architecture and Systems) 연구실을 이끌며 컴퓨터 구조와 시스템 소프트웨어의 접점을 연구한다. 가상화 시스템과 모바일 환경을 위한 컴퓨터 구조, 시스템 보안(신뢰 실행), 메모리 계층 구조의 변화 등을 다룬다. UT Austin에서 박사학위를 받고 AMD에서 프로세서 개발에 참여한 뒤 2008년부터 KAIST에 재직 중이다.
