중성자산란 및 나노스케일 물질 연구실을 운영하며, 중성자 및 방사광 X-선 산란을 이용해 나노미터 크기 영역에서 일어나는 물리·화학적 현상을 연구한다. 다양한 형상의 금속·반도체·자성 나노입자를 빌딩블록으로 한 나노구조 메타물질을 개발하여 에너지 변환·저장, 환경유해물질 제거, 고감도 분자측정 등에 응용한다. 아시아-오세아니아 중성자산란협회(AONSA) 회장을 역임하였다.
