IBS 원자제어 저차원전자계연구단을 이끄는 응집물질실험 연구자이다. 고체 표면의 나노·원자 규모 구조의 전자적 특성과 자기조립을 ARPES, 주사터널링현미경/분광법으로 연구한다. 실리콘 표면 원자선의 금속-절연체 전이, 키랄 솔리톤 발견 등 솔리토닉스 개념 정립에 기여했다.
