강구조 및 철도구조를 전공하는 임남형 교수 연구실은 강교량과 철도 인프라 구조의 설계·거동 해석을 연구한다. 종방향 활동을 허용하는 강철도교 무도상 궤도 구조 기술 등을 개발하였으며, 교수는 충남대 철도연구소장과 한국방재학회 회장을 역임하였다.
