고성능 플라즈마 연구실(Plasma Laboratory for Advanced REsearch)을 이끌며 핵융합 공학 및 플라즈마 물리를 연구한다. 토카막 핵융합로에서 지속적이고 안정적인 핵융합 반응을 유지하기 위한 연구를 수행하며, 막스 플랑크 연구소 및 ITER 국제기구와 공동연구로 폭주전자의 새로운 발생 기작을 규명하기도 했다.
